Arjuna Vishada Yoga

अर्जुनविषादयोग — The Yoga of Arjuna’s Despondency · 47 verses

Summary

The Gita opens on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, where the armies of the Kauravas and the Pandavas stand ready for war. The blind king Dhritarashtra asks his minister Sanjaya, who has been granted divine sight, what is happening. Arjuna asks Krishna, his charioteer, to drive between the two armies so that he can see whom he must fight. Seeing teachers, cousins, uncles and friends on both sides, he is overwhelmed by grief and moral confusion. He argues that killing his own kin can bring no good, lays down his bow and sinks into the chariot. The whole teaching that follows is Krishna’s response to this crisis.

Key themes

  • The battlefield as a picture of inner conflict
  • Grief and confusion before duty

    pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ ||

    What joy could we have in killing the sons of Dhritarashtra, Janardana? Only sin would cling to us if we slew these aggressors.

    saṃkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya ca |
    patanti pitaro hyeṣāṃ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ ||

    This mixing drags both the family and its destroyers down to hell, for their ancestors fall too, deprived of the ritual offerings of rice and water.

    dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyustanme kṣemataraṃ bhavet ||

    It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me in battle, unarmed and offering no resistance.
