Your Lagna — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth — is the starting point of the whole Vedic chart. It sets the first house and colours personality, body and outlook.

What is Lagna?
The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise in turn over the eastern horizon, each for roughly two hours (shorter for some signs, longer for others, depending on your latitude). The sign rising at your birth is your Lagna or ascendant. In Jyotish it becomes the first house, so it determines which sign rules every other house in the chart.
Lagna vs Rashi vs Sun sign
Your Rashi is the sign of the Moon and describes the mind; your Lagna describes the self and body; your sidereal Sun sign describes the soul. Unlike the Rashi, the Lagna depends heavily on the exact birth time.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
The Lagna moves about one degree every four minutes. If your Lagna is near the start or end of a sign, a difference of a few minutes can change it; the calculator warns you when that is the case.
Is Lagna the same as the Western rising sign?
It is the same idea, but Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, so your Vedic Lagna is often one sign earlier than your Western ascendant.
