Sunrise and Sunset Times

Exact sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset for any city and date, with the length of the day and a table for the whole month. These are the times the Panchang is built on — the start of the Vedic day, sandhya vandanam, and fasts broken at moonrise.

Advanced: coordinates and time zone

Which sunrise does the Panchang use?

We give the moment the upper edge of the Sun appears on a sea-level horizon, including atmospheric refraction — the standard definition used by almanacs and by most Panchangs. Hills, tall buildings and altitude can make the visible sunrise a minute or two different.

Moonrise matters for festivals such as Karwa Chauth and Sankashti Chaturthi, when the fast is broken after sighting the Moon.

Frequently asked questions

Why does sunrise change through the year?

The tilt of the Earth’s axis changes the Sun’s path across the sky with the seasons, so days are longer in summer and shorter in winter — more so the farther you are from the equator.

Why is moonrise sometimes missing?

The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, so roughly once a month there is a calendar day with no moonrise (or no moonset) at all.
