The twelve rashis

A rashi is a 30° sign of the sidereal zodiac. The same twelve names are used as in Western astrology, but the signs are measured from the fixed stars, so they begin about 24° later.

Elements and qualities

The signs cycle through four elements — fire, earth, air and water — and three qualities: movable (chara), fixed (sthira) and dual (dwiswabhava). These groupings matter in calculations; for example, the Navamsa sequence for a sign starts from the movable sign of the same element.

Your Moon sign vs your Sun sign

In Jyotish your Moon sign is often treated as “your sign” — it is used for transit forecasts and compatibility. Use the birth chart calculator to find your sidereal Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign.
